Colourful façades in various designs shape Stockholm’s streets and residential areas like mosaics that create exciting new impressions on every corner. The new apartment building in the area Norra Djurgårdsstaden keeps to this tradition with its architecture that was inspired by the region’s industrial past in particular. The residential building contains 76 apartments and was built between 2018 and 2019. The owner is the residential co-op Äril Båtbyggarparken (Stockholm). The building is built by Tobin Properties AB (Stockholm), which focuses on planning and developing residential real estate in Sweden and has been part of the listed real estate company Klövern since 2019 (with headquarters in Stockholm). It was designed and planned by the Semrén & Månsson Architects AB architecture firm (headquartered in Göteborg).

The various cladding materials of the modern building envelope gives the architecture a brand-new effect depending on the angle it is viewed from. The residential building consists of two directly adjacent parts of the building, one of which has a 530 m² façade surface clad with Corten steel panels. This weather-resistant construction steel with its distinct rust layer combines functional advantages such as robustness and low maintenance with industrial charm as well as a warm yet rugged appearance. The 1,652 m² façade of the second part of the building is clad with anthracite-coloured slate panels in two different thicknesses of 10 mm (1,530 m²) and 30 mm (95 m²) that provide durability and a sophisticated look. Wooden cladding in a typical red Scandinavian shade was also installed on a surface of 1,500 m² with a weather and moisture-resistant coating. 
In order to securely and firmly anchor the Corten steel and slate panels, the building contractor Erlandsson Bygg AB (Stockholm) relied on fischer BWM façade systems. The substructure solution consists of the ATK 100 ZeLa system and ATK 100 profile as a vertical base construction onto which the horizontal profiles of the ATK 103 P-20 system were installed with clasps for the purpose of providing a concealed fastening to the façade panels. The façade’s loads that act on the horizontal profiles are transferred onto the vertical profile from where they are transferred into the load-bearing substrate through the wall brackets. 
The ATK 100 KL bracket solution was used instead of the clasps for the 30 mm slate panels. “Our client at Erlandsson Bygg AB was convinced by the advantages of our ZeLa brackets that combine improved energy efficiency and sustainability with secure façade construction through its thermal insulation and the structural advantages of its centric load transfer”, says Stefan Schrag, Market Manager at fischer BWM Fassadensysteme GmbH. The controlled glide area provides additional security to the linear thermal expansion of the carrier profiles. “The façade brackets are also particularly quick and easy to process”, Stefan Schrag adds. The façade construction specialists at Erlandsson Bygg AB fastened the brackets in concrete with fischer SXR frame fixings, before clicking the bracing in place – and done. Due to its high load-bearing capacity, it requires fewer brackets, saving plenty of time, costs and materials overall”. 
The sleek brackets therefore fit perfectly with the insulating material, ensuring that virtually no thermal bridges are created, which reliably prevents the loss of energy. Because the ZeLa bracket meets the highest requirements of energy efficient façades, it was presented with the “suitable Passivhaus component” certificate by the independent Passivhaus Institute certification body. The façade of the Äril apartment building therefore impres-sively combines a distinct and strong look with the safety of state-of-the-art technology that fulfils contemporary thermal protection requirements.
