fischer undercut anchors secure building facades in Europaallee
The total area of Europaallee is approximately 78,000 m². The Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) are building around 400 new apartments as owners and developers on the site. With Zurich’s central train station within walking distance and the facilities for working, shopping and eating in the immediate vicinity, the district describes the new food point for many people.

The so-called “field F” covers a total of around 39,000 m². According to the planning of the Zurich office Boltshauser Architekten, a building for 168 rental apartments (16,300 m² living space) will be built on 28,000 m² of this space. In addition, there is space for offices (7,500 m²), shops and services (800 m²), restaurants (500 m²) and much more. Construction started in 2016 and is scheduled to be completed in 2019. The new facade made of glass and natural stone is of great importance here. The combination of modern transparency and high-quality Sellenberg shell lime and red Mains sandstone gives the building – and thus the entire residential area – a friendly face and a representative look. Beyond aesthetics, the reliability of the building envelope plays the most important role. Because if facades fail, they endanger public safety and life. Therefore, the correct selection and use of the anchors is very important.

The company Zeidler & Wimmel from Kirchheim, Lower Franconia, therefore worked closely with the ACT facade specialists of the fischer group of companies to anchor the natural stone elements. The result is that around 55,000 FZP undercut anchors are used. This facade fastener offers higher holding forces and is suitable for lower panel bending moments than conventional systems and is installed invisibly from the outside, form-fitted and completely without expansion pressure in the undercut borehole of natural stone.
However, it took some preparatory work and experiments with Sellenberg shell lime and red Mains sandstone before the ideal solution was found. The FZP undercut anchors were tested with both materials. For this purpose, the fishermen’s experts, in cooperation with the engineering firm IBT, defined a special test program to represent the installation situation on site as realistically as possible.

Due to the porous stone material, a second series of tests with a greater embedding depth was required to meet the wind and dead load requirements. To this end, the project engineers at fischer and the engineering firm IBT bundled their expertise. Since two stones with different properties are used, they were considered separately and the fastenings were optimised independently according to the respective technical particularities.

The panels used are 40 mm thick with a size from 1,400 to 900 mm. The fischer FZP undercut anchors were the ideal solution for attaching these formats. A comparative analysis of the arbour fastening (an arbour with a mortar anchor) otherwise frequently used in facade construction showed that it would not have been possible to comply with the minimum panel thickness of 40 mm in many areas. As a result, the already planned substructure would not have been feasible. The Sellenberg shell limestone and red Mains sandstone are assembled with the fish anchors to form facade elements and then mounted on the buildings.

The result is a facade that combines functionality and security with an attractive look and can thus shape the new Europaallee district for years to come.
