Setting the anchor for a new business precinct on the coast

fischer facade systems secure shopping centre complex in Auckland, New Zealand

Setting the anchor for a new business precinct on the coast
Alongside the skyline, the new Commercial Bay business district is changing the face of life in the harbour city of Auckland, New Zealand. fischer undercut anchors and substructure solutions ensure the permanently secure and concealed fixing of the façades on the buildings of the new shopping centre in the revitalised waterfront district.
Around 18,000 m² of retail, dining and entertainment space is home to the new shopping centre in Downtown Auckland, which officially opened in June 2020 after five years of construction. The building complex is located at the foot of a 39-storey office tower with 39,000 m² of space, which, at 180 m high, towers above all the roofs in the surrounding area. Thus, a diversely used area consisting of several buildings extends over a total of around 60,000 m².
The progress of the burgeoning business district is also expressed in the modern architecture. The natural stone façades of the buildings in the new shopping centre are an important feature. It was particularly important to the planners that the business district blends in with its natural surroundings. The materials, shapes and patterns used refer to the surrounding landscape with its cliffs and headlands of the nearby Waitemata Harbour. Matching to this, the fischer undercut anchors anchor the external cladding of Jura limestone on a façade area of approx. 4,500 m² concealed and at the same time securely to the fischer SystemOne (BS) and SystemOne light (BSL) substructures - in favour of a harmonious building appearance without visible fixing points. A total of 27,500 Zykon FZP II 13x26 M8/SO/12 AL plate anchors and 6,250 FZP II 11x12 M6/10 A4 special anchors, all made of stainless steel, were provided by fischer for the project from 2017.

The fischer FZP II ensure a form-fit and completely expansion pressure-free fixing in the conically undercut drill hole. Their rear mounting enables fixing at the fifth point of the façade panel. This technique allows the undercut anchors to achieve particularly low panel bending moments and high load-bearing capacities. This made it possible to use thin and at the same time large-format limestone slabs on the façade of the new shopping centre in the Commercial Bay district. If necessary, the subsequent replacement of individual or all slabs is also feasible by using the SystemOne (BS) and SystemOne light (BSL) suspension profiles.
"I was looking for an alternative solution to a staple and dowel fixing in order to be able to implement the planned façade design. With the fischer SystemOne and SystemOne light undercut anchors and substructure solutions, the planners' requirements could be met."
