Fire and flame for fire protection

fischer FireStop solutions secure King Khalid International Airport (KKIA) in Riyadh

Fire and flame for fire protection
Around 26 million passengers took off and landed here in 2019: KKIA in Riyadh is the second largest airport in Saudi Arabia by passenger number. The airport was completed in 1983. Unusual are its 375 square kilometres of space, of which only about a quarter is currently used, and the control tower, which is one of the highest in the world at 81 metres. Distributed over different phases, the current renovation work can be carried out during ongoing operation. The aim of the project is to expand KKIA’s passenger capacities, including a new 5th terminal, and to improve services.

Safety in case of fire

Product solutions from the fastening specialist fischer are used for the renovation of terminals 3 and 4, which are seven floors high each. “We are pleased that our fischer FireStop solutions are being installed as an important safety precaution in the KKIA,” says Constantin Wiegert, Head of Facade and Fire Protection Systems at fischer. "After the new construction of Istanbul Airport, the renovation and expansion of the KKIA will soon be the next major airport project for which we are implementing passive fire protection. The reasons for this are that we offer the right products and services from a single source, work successfully with our specialist partners and combine our central know-how with the expertise of our local subsidiaries, which creates greater proximity to customers and markets."

All penetration openings of MEP applications (mechanical, electrical and plumbing work) and construction joints are securely sealed on the KKIA with fischer FireStop solutions. The installed products include the fischer FiAM fire barrier. When exposed to fire, this 1-component, water-based acrylic emulsion forms a highly insulating barrier. This ensures that the product can lock the room for up to five hours. The universally applicable fish fire protection sealant UFS 310 was also installed. When a fire breaks out, it expands to many times its volume. The UFS 310 then hardens to form an elastic, flexible fire seal. It achieves up to four hours of fire resistance. Fischer FAZ II, EA II and FZEA II steel anchors are also used for numerous fastening tasks in concrete.

The heavy pipe installations are supported by the fisher heavy-duty system FMS. Compared to a conventional steel structure, the FMS system offers decisive advantages in terms of assembly. The hot-dip galvanised profiles are cut to size on site and screwed together permanently and securely with angles. This eliminates the need to weld steel structures and apply corrosion protection on site, and significantly reduces installation time – resulting in lower costs.
We convinced our customers to provide suitable product solutions for any project requirements. From a wide range of fasteners for all applications and building materials to installation systems for all MEP applications and high-quality passive fire protection solutions to first-class service, we offered everything from a single source.
